Cheque book ?

Is purchasing a 3D body, cheque book modelling? That is the question. Gavin Rose very kindly reduced his 4mm LBSCR E2 to 3mm to produce this fine body. Add a pair of 3SMR chassis sides and coupling rods, 14.2 chassis spaces, Andy Shillito motor, Branchline gears, Society wheels and no I would not say it is. The body is a means to an end.

Need to level the body but pretty pleased with the result.

Stock progress

Slow but steady progress on the Stock front.

One SR 12t van finished today (to paint the chassis & roof? – answers on a post)

The other ongoing project is a 3D printed SE&CR push pull driving trailer as used on the Westerham branch (one half of a 2 car set). Initial green coat put on, floor from plasticised and coach bogies from MJT (yes we do them in 3mm scale). A lot to do yet, fortunately managed to pick up a copy of the Mike King SR Pull – Push Stock book which gives details of the interior and some decent photos.

What coupling

Over the Christmas period I have been trial fitting Sprat and Winkle coupling to some of my wagons.

Reflecting after the Beckenham show, not only was their a need for track laying in some parts but also a more reliable coupling system was found wanting.

The B&Bs are very sensetive to lumps and bumps in the track and for the crack handed like me difficult to put together. Yes their advantage is that they are unobtrusive but need to be finely adjusted.

So thought I would give the Sprat and Winkles a go. Until they are track tested I will not make a final decision – better get on with relaying the track then!

Wimblehurst Road At Uckfield

Wimblehurst Road – Uckfield tomorrow!

24 hours to go – so will it be a case of burning the midnight oil?

Really pleased with the way the scenery has turned out although have not been able to do a backscene but have the lighting beam finished with one layout name on. Should of been a totem but had to be cut down to fit – ho hum.

As for the running – given the track a good clean and made adjustments to the 3 road fiddle yard exit with wire n tube, hopefully cured the gauging issue.

As for locos – have not managed to finish the Terrier (longest loco build in history) for a variety of reasons mainly not happy about the pickups and having a job with a lot of evening work the past couple of weeks has not helped. Still thanks to the good offices of the Mid Kent light railway the Colonel has been able to borrow some locos plus the Lee branch and the Amersham and district have contributed stock plus the Cobham light (my sincere thanks gentleman).

Today it is case of fitting end protectors and packing all that’s required for tomorrow’s early start.

Slow progress.

When you think October is a long way away now at the end of July!

Still lots to do. The Pickering Railcar is now motorised but need to sort out the weight issue.

Good news on the Terrier, I now have a working runnable chassis!

So next to the painting and finishing stage, need to research which one it needs to be.

Today took delivery of a LB&SC 54′ brake coach built for me by Andrew Barnes. An excellent model it is too and my grateful thanks go to Andrew for the time he has put it to building it for me.

In true Colonel Stephen’s fashion Andrew has also loaned me some wagons and a brake van.

Again a beautiful model. Thanks Andrew.

Tonbridge model railway exhibition

Tonbridge MRS exhibition is one of the highlights of February and this year I was invited to help the Croydon lads with Hemlock which is a representation of the Hemyock branch. The scale as you may of guessed is 3mm and Hemlock was originally 12mm gauge and modelled for reverse running where the station was entered from the dairy end instead of from the other direction as on the prototype. The stream running alongside was also made into a canal. However the decision was taken a few years ago now to change the track gauge to 14.2 and thus to accommodate this the running line was changed to come in from the proper direction, although the canal stayed.

Sorry for the trees but I have a penchant for model trees and just had to feature these excellent examples made by Mike Davey of Croydon club.

Tonbridge club looked after us and dinner was Shepherds Pie and veg followed by Apple slice and cream. Later also came the cakes (of which I should of taken a few photos ala Phil Parker).

A very enjoyable day and thanks to the Croydon lads for inviting me along. Here are a few pics I took of some of the layouts there.

Terrier progress

Able to snatch an hours modelling today.

Progress on the Terrier is slow but at least it is starting to look like one.

Cab completed plus bunker rear and coal rails added (superglue is wonderful stuff).

Cab roof is going to be a b****r to do though – save that for a day when I have more time.
