Westfest 2019

Saturday saw a run down to Winterborne Earls, nr Salisbury to visit 3mm Westfest organised by local member Vic Freemantle.

Always a popular event and judging by the full car park pretty busy too.

The Society shop and Seconhand were their plying their trade along with 3smr and members with delights to offer, not forgetting Peter White with the Society finescale wheels.

Now not only were there goods to be had but also a number of layouts on display.

Ally Pally exhibition

Mr P and I visited the BRM sponsored MRC exhibition at Alexandra Palace yesterday.

Because on engineering works at the Cross we took the London Overground up to Highbury & Islington and then Great Northern to Alexandra Palace.

After a walk up the hill (both wishing we’d caught the bus) and a pint we went round the exhibition.

One observation was that it was a case of hunt the layout due to the vast number of trade stands. Some layouts we had both seen before whilst others were new to us.

All in all a good exhibition. Also we had an ahhh moment – hedgehog 🦔 numbers are seriously reduced so fundraising well in hand!

Bus back to the station and some LNER action whilst waiting for the train home.

Bolstered by the Brighton

Even in 3mm scale we have our own 3D printers – George Mitcheson has produced a number of 3D printed wagons and one that took my fancy was the London, Brighton and South Coast Rly Bolster wagon (the Brighton called then Batten wagons).

The wagon comes as a one piece moulding incorporating the body and sole bars.

W-irons, castings and brake gear and wheels supplied from the 3mm Society with chain from branchlines and d loops from brass wire.

An evenings work produced the wagon and it will soon be in the paint shop to be completed in Southern Railway livery.

Details and drawing for the wagon can be found in “An Illustrated History of Southern Wagons – Volume 2 LBSCR & minor companies published by OPC.

Paint shop

Sprayed the wagon with Matt black primer and then used acrylics for the body.

The planking was coloured using Lifecolouts white wood set along with Tamiya Deck Tan acrylic paint. First time I have used life colour.

Next step will be to add couplings and transfers.

Wimblehurst Road Update

Not a lot to show over the summer. The layout is in the process of being rewired. Had to redo the river as the material I used had shrunk with the heat so tried Yacht varnish but that has a mind of its own.

So concentrated on adding scenic items such as Modelu figures.

Here are 2 examples

Still a lot to do before July next year, dare say the time will fly by.
